5 Security Features For Your Gun Safe

Posted on

When it comes time to purchase a gun safe, you don't want to purchase just any safe. You need to purchase a safe that is really going to keep your gun as secure as possible so that no one will be able to break in. There are security features you can look for that will enhance the safety of your gun safe.

Hard Plates

The first security feature you should look for is hard plates. Hard plates are placed between the locking mechanism on the inside and outside of the door. The thickness of these plates can vary, but the overall purpose is to protect the lock so that it can't be drilled into and accessed that way. The hard plates can also help prevent someone from accessing the gun safe by damaging it.

Anti-Pry Tab

Another security feature to look for is an anti-pry tab. An anti-pry tab is located right by the corner of the door on the inside. It is in place so that one can't take a pry bar and use it to force the door open. This is a simple safety feature that helps ensure the someone can't bypass the lock on your door and use it to get inside of your gun safe.

Bolt Shear

A bolt shear is another security method that protects your safe from being forced open. It is a pin that is located between the handle and the bolt of your safe. If someone tries to force the handle open, this pin will shear off. As a result, the handle will start to move around freely; however, the door will be impossible to open. Basically, a bolt shear will break the handle, making it impossible to force the safe door open by putting excessive force on the handle.

Slip Clutch

A slip clutch is another safety method that helps keep your safe secure. It is a part of the handle on the outside of your safe. With a slip clutch, if too much pressure is put on the handle, it will just start to spin freely, preventing anyone from opening the safe with the handle.

Bolt-Down Kit

Finally, some safes come with a bolt-down kit. A bolt-down kit is sold with safes that have special bolt holes on the inside of the safe. You put the bolts into the ground, through the same. To remove the bolts, you have to have access to the inside of the safe.

With a bolt-down kit, your safe can't be carried out of your home and removed. When the safe is bolted down, it will also be impossible to manipulate the safe orientation to force it open in another manner.

When it comes to buying a gun safe, you will want to look for one that has at least one or two safety features, such as hard plates, anti-pry bar, bolt shear, slip clutch, and bolt-down kit. This will help to keep your guns as secure as possible inside the safe.
