Safeguard Your Keyless Entry Vehicle from Theft

Posted on

In terms of convivence, few auto industry upgrades have been as beneficial as keyless entry. With this feature, as long as the key is nearby, you can enter the vehicle, and even drive it. However, as with most technological advancements, there is always a downside. In terms of keyless entry, this downside is security, as some hackers can navigate this technology to take possession of your vehicle, even without the key. It's a good idea to learn how you can safeguard yourself.

Unused Key Fobs

Typically, vehicle manufacturers will provide the owner of the vehicle with two or three keyless entry fobs with the vehicle purchase. If you have multiple key fobs, it might be a good idea to disengage the fobs that you are not currently using. For example, if you and your spouse both have fobs, but you have an extra one, turn the third one off.

When you disengage the fob, it prevents the remote from signaling the vehicle — which means if someone steals the fob, they can't operate your car. Don't attempt to disengage the fob on your own, as it's easy to cause irreversible damage to the remote. Contact an auto locksmith for assistance.

Signal Blocking Equipment

One of the more dangerous, yet easy, measures that hackers sometimes use to gain access to someone's vehicle is to make a duplicate key fob. In simple terms, hackers use sophisticated technology to intercept the signal that your key fob sends to your vehicle.

The hacker then duplicates this frequency on their fob, which gives them a duplicate key to the vehicle. Using signal blocking equipment to carry your keys in when you're in large crowds can help protect you. However, make sure you speak with an auto locksmith first to determine what type of frequency your fob transmits to ensure you choose compatible equipment.

Alarm Systems

In terms of protection, one of the best things you can do is to install an alarm for your vehicle. Although most vehicles with keyless entry have built-in security systems, a more advanced system installed by a locksmith serves as an added layer of protection for your vehicle.

With an alarm system, even if the individual is able to make a duplicate key fob to operate the vehicle or steals it, an advanced alarm system would allow you to turn the vehicle off and disarm the key.

If you want to safeguard your keyless entry vehicle, don't hesitate to contact a local auto locksmith to learn about measures you can take.
