Four Reasons To Replace Your Home Locks

You may not have thought much about when it's important to replace your home locks. Many locksmiths recommend that people replace their locks on a regular basis, but here are some times when it's very important to get the task done. 

When You Move to a New Place

Any time you move to a new location, this is a cause for calling in a locksmith. It's not a good idea to simply trust the judgement of the people before you; they may have had any number of relatives, friends, maintenance workers, or lovers who had access to the keys. While you may hope that none of these people copied the key and retained a copy, it's just best not to take any chances. 

When They Aren't Working Correctly

You may brush off a lock that jams or sticks. But a lock that's not working properly may point to an unreliable locking mechanism that could be vulnerable to brute force attacks. Be sure to have a locksmith check out your locks any time there's an ongoing issue. 

When You Can Afford an Upgrade

When you can afford it, it's often a good idea to upgrade your locks to something with a better safety profile. if you're using knob locks that are vulnerable to brute force attacks, consider adding a padlock. From there, you might want to add a flip guard that will catch burglars off guard if they manage to get past your padlock. If you can afford to do even more than that, consider an electronic or biometric locking system. If you can't afford to redo the locks in the whole house, consider just upgrading the ones that are at key entry points. 

When You Want to Add Convenience

Mechanical locking systems work perfectly well, but sometimes you just want to opt for the greater security and convenience that newer locking systems provide. As an example, new smart locking systems can provide you with features such as keyless entry. They would also allow you to lock or unlock the doors remotely. You won't have to worry whether you locked the door or not, since you can simply check from a mobile device. And you won't need to worry about rekeying your locks if you want to delete someone's access; you can simply change the combination code.
