Lots Of Keys - Little Safety

Posted on

If picking up your key ring is equivalent to hoisting a hand weight, you may be packing around too many keys. Although many of your keys are necessary, some need to be removed from your gigantic ring, including the one that opens your 7th grade locker. You may feel safer carrying three car and four house keys with you, but it's not logical and can cause you several problems.

Time

If your key ring is huge, you won't have problems finding it, but you will have trouble using it. Unlocking anything can become a time-consuming and annoying task, one guaranteed to irk your date or your family members. The only people who need that number of keys are janitors or security officers. If you are neither, you should reduce your collection.

Safety

Logically, carrying multiple house and car keys on one chain does not protect you at all. If you lose the chain, you lose all your spares at once. Although you do need a spare or two of important keys, they should be kept in separate locations. You also do not want too many copies because they can easily fall into the wrong hands without you realizing it. You need to keep track of all copies of your keys and give out only a few spares. If you lose track of a house key, you should have your locks changed or rekeyed. If you lose your car key, you can have a locksmith reprogram your remaining key and produce another spare for you. This sort of key management is more sensible than trying to carry all the keys at once.

Ignition Damage

Car experts say that carrying more than eight keys can actually damage your ignition switch. The weight of your key ring weighs down the switch and wears on the internal barrels. Eventually, you could have problems starting your vehicle, leading to a trip to your mechanic. In fact, you will be safer separating the car key from the ring while you are driving since that cuts down on the weight on the switch.

You can carry too many keys, and having so many on one ring is neither efficient nor safe. You need to sit down and remove all the old keys that do not open anything and put your spares elsewhere. Keep track of the number and location of all your keys, and contact a locksmith from a company like ASAP Mobile Locksmiths if your keys are stolen or lost.
